Embracing Flexibility and Efficiency: The Advantages of Virtual and Bite-Sized Learning

In an era characterised by rapid technological advancements and shifting workplace dynamics, the approach to Learning and Development (L&D) has undergone a significant transformation. The 2023 Global Learning and Development Trends survey by Arcadia Consulting highlights a notable shift towards virtual and bite-sized learning modalities, which are reshaping the terrain of professional development.

Virtual Learning: A Gateway to Accessibility and Convenience

Virtual learning has emerged as a powerful tool in the L&D arsenal, with 68% of global respondents acknowledging it among their top three effective delivery modes. The ascendancy of virtual training is underpinned by its unparalleled accessibility. Professionals can engage in learning activities irrespective of their geographic location, thereby democratising access to knowledge and expertise. The convenience of virtual platforms allows employees to integrate learning into their busy schedules without the need for travel, which can be both time-consuming, costly and damaging to the environment.

Furthermore, virtual learning environments offer a plethora of interactive tools and resources that can enhance the learning experience. Live webinars, forums, and chat functionalities enable real-time engagement and collaboration, fostering a sense of community that transcends physical boundaries. This interactive aspect ensures that virtual learning is not a solitary pursuit but a collective journey towards professional enhancement.

Bite-Sized Learning: Catering to the Modern Attention Span

The survey also points to the growing preference for bite-sized learning sessions, with over half of the respondents favouring this format for mindset and culture training. In the current landscape where attention spans are increasingly fragmented, bite-sized learning aligns perfectly with the need for concise and focused content delivery. These short, targeted learning sessions can be easily woven into the fabric of a typical workday, allowing employees to learn without being overwhelmed.

Bite-sized learning modules are designed to target specific skills or knowledge areas, making the learning process more manageable and retention more likely. This modality also aligns with the principles of micro-learning, which posits that learners are more likely to absorb and recall information presented in small, well-structured chunks.

Additionally, bite-sized learning facilitates immediate application of knowledge, which is a critical factor in adult learning theory. Employees can quickly apply new insights to their work, reinforcing their learning through practice and contributing to a more dynamic and responsive work environment.

Our Approach

The outbreak of COVID meant a sharp pivot from face-to-face learning to virtual. At Actualize we were fortunate to have already explored virtual learning so were able to hit the ground running. We took it one step further by designing impactful, short virtual sessions. One example is our Negotiation Skills program which we deliver in three 3-hour fast-paced sessions that utilise business-based case studies in live negotiations. We also offer 60-90-minute bite-sized sessions to allow participants to focus wholly on one topic and explore how they’ll adopt their new skills in the workplace. 

While face-to-face learning will always be the ideal delivery format, it's essential to get the best out of virtual and bite-sized by offering an engaging and impactful experience. The most common feedback we get from our clients is that our methods embed the learning.
